Check the manufacturer's BTU figure rather than assuming a large-looking rail delivers large heat.
Larger bathrooms and older Irish homes
Solid walls, single glazing or a north-facing window all push your BTU requirement up. Plan for proper radiator output first, then treat the towel rail as a complement rather than the main heat source. Under-specifying here is the most common and most expensive mistake to fix, because it usually means re-tiling.
How to work out the BTU your bathroom needs
You don't need a heating engineer for a rough figure. Measure the room and do this:
- Multiply length × width × height in metres to get the room volume in m³.
- Multiply that volume by roughly 150 to get a ballpark BTU requirement for a bathroom, which is heated to a higher target temperature than a bedroom or hall.
- Add around 10–20% if the room is north-facing, poorly insulated or has a large window or an external door.
So a 3m x 2.5m family bathroom with a 2.4m ceiling is 18m³, which lands around 2,700 BTUs on the raw figure and roughly 3,200 once you add 20% for an older, less insulated Irish build.
